Flashlights, for Home and Extreme Outdoor Use

Andre Speransky

Andre Speransky

Flashlights can be an important asset when the lights go out, or when you go camping. It is a tool that works well in the basement, or if you are camping out in the woods. This piece of technology has evolved and has undergone a transition from an incandescent light bulb to a much brighter LED flashlight. These flashlights now come in various designs, colors, specifications, and distinguishing features.

So you may be out there trying to find the brightest flashlight which would serve your purposes, and have trouble making a choice. With such a big selection, this is understandable. We’ll help you look at the options out there when selecting a flashlight.

Types

There are numerous types of bright flashlights, and most of these can be categorized based on their design and light source. Below are some of the brightest flashlights in the market.

  • LED flashlights: These have become the most commonly used flashlight in modern times, due to several factors. LED flashlights utilize bulbs that are given out white light with a blue hue. LED bulbs don’t become hot, and they also don't consume a lot of energy. It should be noted that LED bulbs are energy savers due to their design, and using them in these types of flashlights helps conserve battery consumption. LED flashlights are also usually more durable, being designed with sturdy materials to withstand a fall. But LED flashlights may also be more expensive.

  • Incandescent Bulb Flashlight: Do you remember those flashlights from old Hollywood movies that usually have a yellow-colored hue? You don’t see so many of them around anymore, since incandescent bulbs have a shorter life than LED bulbs. They have a metal filament that gets white-hot, to emit light--so they can get hot as well. They also aren’t as bright as the LED flashlights, but they can do the job required of them, and they cost less. But, a flashlight using an incandescent bulb is best used in your basement or during a power outage. Since the glass bulb is fragile, this type of flashlight might not be the best choice when going hiking or camping.

  • HID Flashlights: The High-Intensity Discharge Flashlights are one of the brightest flashlights on the market, due to their bright illumination. These flashlights have designed to produce high-intensity brightness and can be portable enough for use when hiking. The HID flashlights use a technique of dispersing light where an electric current is channeled to pass through a glass ball filled with ionized gas. These types of flashlights are expensive and aren't too common for everyday usage, so you'd rarely see them at your local store. But, maybe you can order them online, among tactical flashlights.

What Reviewers Have to Say

  • Lumens: When it comes to measuring light intensity, the intensity is usually given in units called lumens. Strictly speaking, it’s the unit of “luminous flux”--how much light is emitted by a light source in all directions. We can also say that lumens are the intensity of light emitted from a light source, which the human eye can detect. When it comes to a flashlight, the lumens is the rating used to signify how powerful or bright the flashlight can shine. The intensity of the most bright flashlight can start from around 10,000 and go up to 100,000 Lumens. But you’ll find very bright flashlights rated at 2000 lumens.

  • Power Source: The power source is also an important part of how bright the flashlight will be. Since these bright flashlights emit high-intensity light, their energy consumption can be high, and they need a power source for smooth operation. Most of these flashlights are powered by a rechargeable battery or set of batteries. They’ll charge up in a charging device, or maybe even by means of a USB cable, as in the Lumintop Mini-Torch.

  • Optics: Besides using a super-bright LED lamp, some flashlights will have optics that enhance the light. Lumintop’s Mini-Torch has a TIR (=Total Internal Reflection) optical lens that produces a uniform beam of light.

Important Features

  • Brightness: An HID flashlight is a great choice if you need a flashlight that is very bright, for a very long period of time, like on a long-distance hike at night. An example is the Goodsmann HID Portable Handheld Light, with 2000 lumens of light. For LED flashlights, you can get an Anker LC90 flashlight, at 900 lumens.

  • Pricing: This is one factor a lot of people overlook, and it can be a deciding factor on the type of flashlight you get. HID flashlights are one the most expensive flashlights out there, while you can get a good LED flashlight for around £26.

  • Design: Another consideration is the design of the flashlight. There are headlamp flashlights that you can wear as a headband. There are also tactical flashlights, which have a high Ingress Protection (IP) rating, so that they are resistant against the penetration of water and dust.

Top-Rated Brands

  • IMALENT is one of the leading brands in bright flashlights, as they have some of the brightest products in the market. Their Imalent MS18W can produce 100,000 lumens!

  • Fenix is also a leading name in bright flashlight, and is certainly worth a try. They also make headlamps, lanterns, bike lights, and more.

  • Noctigon is a manufacturer of top-notch LED flashlights, with special LED optics and anti-reflective lenses. They make flashlights that employ a series of LEDs, arranged in a ring.
