A Guide to Selecting the Best Skateboards For Kids
Choosing the right skateboard for kids involves considering their age, skill level, and personal preferences. It's important to ensure that the skateboard is safe, durable, and suitable for the child's size and ability. A well-chosen skateboard can enhance the learning experience and make skateboarding more enjoyable for kids. When selecting a skateboard, focus on the key specifications that will impact the child's comfort and safety while riding.
Deck Size
The deck size of a skateboard refers to the width and length of the board. This is important because it affects the stability and control the rider will have. For kids, a smaller deck size is generally more appropriate as it is easier for them to maneuver. Decks typically range from 6.5 to 8 inches in width. For younger children or beginners, a deck width of 6.5 to 7.5 inches is ideal as it provides a good balance of stability and control. As the child grows or becomes more experienced, they might prefer a slightly wider deck for more stability.
Deck Material
The material of the skateboard deck affects its durability and weight. Most skateboard decks are made from maple wood, which is strong and flexible. Some decks may also be made from bamboo or plastic, which can be lighter and more affordable. For kids, a maple deck is often recommended due to its durability and ability to withstand the wear and tear of learning. However, if weight is a concern, a bamboo or plastic deck might be a better choice as they are lighter and easier for kids to carry.
Trucks
Trucks are the metal T-shaped pieces that attach the wheels to the deck. They are crucial for turning and stability. The size of the trucks should match the width of the deck to ensure proper balance. For kids, lightweight trucks are preferable as they make the skateboard easier to handle. When choosing trucks, look for ones that are durable and provide good turning capabilities, which will help kids learn to steer and control their skateboard effectively.
Wheels
Wheels are an essential part of the skateboard, affecting the ride's smoothness and speed. They come in various sizes and hardness levels. For kids, softer wheels (with a durometer rating of 78A to 87A) are recommended as they provide better grip and a smoother ride, especially on rough surfaces. Wheel size should also be considered; smaller wheels (50mm to 54mm) are ideal for beginners as they offer more control and stability. As the child gains confidence, they might opt for slightly larger wheels for increased speed.
Bearings
Bearings are small metal pieces that fit inside the wheels and allow them to spin. The quality of the bearings affects how smoothly and quickly the skateboard can roll. Bearings are rated using the ABEC scale, with higher numbers indicating greater precision and speed. For kids, ABEC 3 to ABEC 5 bearings are usually sufficient, providing a good balance of speed and control. It's important to choose bearings that are durable and easy to maintain, as they will need to be cleaned and lubricated regularly to ensure optimal performance.
Grip Tape
Grip tape is the sandpaper-like material applied to the top of the skateboard deck to provide traction for the rider's feet. This is important for maintaining control and stability while riding. For kids, a standard grip tape is usually adequate, as it provides enough grip to keep their feet securely on the board. Some grip tapes come in fun colors or designs, which can be appealing to children and allow them to personalize their skateboard. Ensure the grip tape is applied evenly and securely to prevent any slipping.
