- How to measure your stairs: measure the depth of the stair tread (standard depth is 9in). measure the height of the riser (standard height is 7in). add these two measurements together (9+7) and multiply by the number of stairs you require carpet for. (e.g 13 steps x 16in = 208 inches plus add 9 inches for the top riser. 217 inches = 18ft).
